Another year has drifted past while we have grown yet older Now's the time that long lost friends appear to be much bolder, They deftly hint the dreaded age while all around they fuss Should we return their taunt aloud 'You went to school with us!' But while they laugh and count grey hairs before they all fall out We smile and recall long past days when health was not in doubt, And even now despite decades that we did party much There are so many distant friends with whom we keep in touch. The years have been quite kind to us despite the burning sun So when we drench our flesh with oil we do it just for fun, It's such a pity others here must run the daily chore To keep their skins as young as ours with creams and oh! much more. And when at last we go to sleep and dream in perfect bliss We know that age is like a snake not even talk just hiss! The long lost days, and weeks, and years we spent while we grew old They have so many hidden tales and stories to unfold. So as we live our seventy years then try for seventy more There's bound to be such happiness as we have met before, In all our years in many lands both here and overseas There's been much wonder, joy and hope through tempest and light breeze. We've grown much stronger than those folks who lived their lifes at home A home where they were born and bred but were not free to roam, From cot to school, from school to work, and then a family And all this with their home town kept as close as it could be. You spread your wings and soar on high and venture from the nest Then live and love and dare to face the only valid test, You are alive and know full well the skills that you've acquired Will gain for you and those you love those many dreams desired. The years do pass and birthdays come and go without regret For every year that greets us is a year we'll not forget, It promises to give to us the opportunity To find true love and share it with another who's born free. And with the love that's kindled now and growing day by day There dwells a hope and quiet thought of things that soon will be, A time when Birthdays will be spent in joy and happiness From dawn to dusk 'neath sun and moon and 'neath your sweet caress. And that's the time when birthday's age it's meaning will have lost We'll be together year by year in heatwave and in frost, Our lives entwined both free to fly away or to remain To stay together ever more: I know that that is sane. So when this day has past away to just a memory Remember that my love for you is like the old oak tree, Despite its aged twisted stem it's heart is strong in deed And with the wisdom of the years it's you, my love, I need. |
