For years I studied to become an expert in my
trade.
For two decades I held respect from
colleagues that I knew.
But then the challenge came again from
countries far away,
With wages that the third-world pays, great
costing will eschew.
And though the skills newcomers bring may be
below the par,
Some managers with short term views do not
appear to care.
The work that’s done is classified “much
cheaper” than at home
Perhaps because good training can be
something that’s quite rare.
It’s true the some who steal our work from
far across the sea
Have learned in universities prestigious in
their land.
But then the learning they’ve endured can
easily be seen
To use the new technology of silica and sand.
When your year-old Porch breaks down and you
take it for repair
It’s to mechanics who’ve been trained to
service this sports car.
And since they lack experience that comes
with long lost skills.
Who would dare to take to them: a vintage
Model “T” star.
The Model “T”, it was designed with different
needs in view.
The skills today’s mechanics have, with
computing power,
Cannot make a Model “T” cruise at EIGHTY
MILES AN HOUR!
So we need these older skills for cars that
run much slower.
It is true! A PC geeks can write a mainframe
program
Just like a Porch mechanic could force Model
‘T’s to run.
But even with intentions good they lack the
older skills
So tasks with much more subtle needs cause
damage to be done.
Training in the bygone years catered for what
was needed.
Now critical needs are overlooked, passing
by unnoticed.
Modern teachings supercede knowledge we
learned at a cost
Alas, this narrow vision means hard learned
lessons are lost.
Many newcomers nowadays have learned that
they can bluff
Trick co-workers to do tasks they alone can
not.
Plagiarize their colleagues work, deny them
any credit.
Image now their
only goal - be it justified or NOT.
